Driving home from germany it died out of nowhere, threw these 2 codes and another for ignition/accessory circuit, clearing them it won’t set any new codes.
Also no spark at all, seems no signal for the ignition coilpack. WELP. Time to bring out all the electrical knowhow and tools and start prodding...

A bit cruel! :P A friend had an NA-spec Mk. 1 Focus 5-door hatch for years and had no issues other than rust on the rear hatch...

Quick Google session tells that the ECU in those fails quite often from the ignition side. I found this while Ford dudes were discussing about one case that also ended up needing a new ECU. I guess failing coil can damage the ECU:
“Just had one like this. Came in none starter. Checked the coil, it was faulty on 2 cylinders. Changed the coil for an after market one - no difference. No faultcodes showing but injectors were being fired but no spark. Everything checked out ok but ecu not triggering the coil. Sent ecu off to get checked told it was faulty and they repaired it. Ecu fitted and car started straight away and after 5 seconds it would cut out and the codes P0351 and P0352 being recorded . Codes cleared and every time exactly the same. Sent the ecu back and they said it tested fine on the bench. Put back on and just the same, coil replaced with genuine one in case but no difference.
Eventually tried a second hand ecu and matched key and car runs perfectly.
Am now in discussions with said repairer (not BBA) to try and get my cash back.”

Not sure if it is the same with euro mk1 foci, but the US SVT version the wires for the connector that sends the signal to the coils has too tight of a bend radius. Causes the wires to pull out and you lose 2 cylinders. https://www.amazon.com/Motorcraft-WPT517-Ignition-Coil-Connector/dp/B000IYK7TW

Right connector, i’ll have to check for continuity once i get the ECU out of it’s plug. But seems the ECU is a dud too.

Yeah that’s what i found aswell, along with 3 companies(one local) that’ll repair them. 2 of them say you MUST replace the ignition coil with a new when replacing with a repaired ECU to avoid the old ECU having damaged the old coil. I found a source saying it was common for most fords with this ECU from ‘98 to ‘05. Also found a bunch of german dudes discussing what goes wrong in them, linking the FET’s that you need to replace, and showing their location on the ECU PCB.
As a side note, since it won’t run at all, it won’t throw any new error codes.
Gonna drop by the dealership tomorrow for a quote on new ecu or having an used re-programmed.
